Day Hiking to Mt Ellinor Hiking (8-1-2010) - Mt Skokomish Wilderness 7.2 miles with 3244 ft elev gain
Mt Ellinor is in Mt Skokomish Wilderness, Southeastern Olyimpics. The trailhead is located above the Hoodsport, opposite direction to the Staircase on the Forest Road 24 at the SR 119 juction. From the lower trail, it was only 7.2 miles of round trip with 3244 ft gain. However, last 2200 ft to the summit was 2.2 miles. Any hiking 1000 ft/mile elevation or 20% elevation grade is considered very steep and requires decent fitness. As you may see on the pictures, most of the 2nd half hiking was very steep hills. I felt that both of my calf was somewhat stiff that I did not feel this before. The cool part of this hiking was that there was still lots of snow and was not quite dangerous with extreme caution. I really enjoyed this steep hike. My lessons learned from this hike was that it would be a lot easier and safer hiking with hiking poles. So, I will buy them before my next hiking.
